Four women could face life sentences over ‘spicy’ airport drug plot

Four women, including two teens, could face life in jail after being accused of trying to smuggle 30 kilograms of cocaine wrapped vinegar and chilli-soaked towels into Australia.

Australian Federal Police said two 18-year-olds flew from Hong Kong to Brisbane on Thursday and were stopped by Australian Border Force officers at the airport.

Officers allegedly found 30 bricks of “spicy drugs” wrapped in the towels in four suitcases. It allegedly contained cocaine.

The teens were charged with one count each of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled substance.

Two more women, aged 23 and 21, who police say had given instructions on obtaining passports, airline tickets and accommodation, were also arrested and charged with one count each of attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.

Munster set to play Origin decider for Maroons despite father’s death

In State of Origin news, Queensland captain Cameron Munster has left Origin camp after the death of his father Steven, but plans to return and lead the Maroons in Wednesday’s decider.

Munster learned of his father’s death overnight in Queensland camp on the Sunshine Coast, with coach Billy Slater confirming the news in a statement on The Sunday Footy Show.

Munster was given the option to stand down from Origin III at Accor Stadium by Queensland officials, but has told officials he wants to play in honour of his late father.

The Storm five-eighth produced a man-of-the-match performance and led a stirring Queensland upset in Perth after being handed the state captaincy. Longtime teammate and Cameron Smith backed Munster to return for the decider, while Broncos star Reece Walsh remains in camp as 18th man.

Police probe multiple deaths in homes in two states

Police in two states are investigating the separate but similar discoveries of dead men.

Two men, believed to be aged in their 70s and 80s, were found dead in a home in inner-city Sydney on Thursday.

In Queensland, police found two dead men, aged 65 and 56, during a welfare check at a unit complex on the Sunshine Coast on Friday.

It is unclear when the men died. Police investigations are continuing.

Woman loses arm in lion attack at Queensland zoo

A woman has lost an arm after she was attacked by a lion at a zoo in Queensland’s Darling Downs on Sunday morning.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said paramedics were called to Darling Downs Zoo, on Baines Road at Pilton, about 35 kilometres south of Toowoomba, at 8.23am.

There, they found a woman in her 50s with “significant arm injuries” whom they airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, about 110 kilometres north-east of the zoo, in a stable condition.

It is understood the woman’s arm was lost during the attack.
