Sydney has landed star Carlton goalkicker Charlie Curnow on a dramatic final day of the AFL trade period that saw two Swans head in the other direction to play for the Blues.
Curnow, 28, was one of the biggest names available during this year’s player exchange period, and both the Swans and Geelong submitted offers for the two-time Coleman medallist.

The deal, completed within three minutes of the AFL’s trade deadline on Wednesday, saw Curnow traded to the Swans for pick 11 in this year’s draft, a first-round pick in each of the next two years, and Will Hayward.
The Swans also received pick 31 and 42 this year, and a second-round pick in 2027.
Curnow’s manager, Robbie D’Orazio, said the full-forward’s move to Sydney was completed after the Swans agreed to throw in an extra draft pick to satisfy the Blues.
The Swans were seen as favourites for Curnow’s signature after Carlton rejected Geelong’s initial offer, and the full-forward was seen touring Sydney’s facilities in Moore Park.
“[Swans coach] Dean Cox really took him under his wing in the last week – he can’t wait to get up there,” D’Orazio told AFL Trade Radio. “I honestly think it was 7:27pm, and it came down to that.”
Curnow is Sydney’s most high-profile signing since they landed Lance “Buddy” Franklin from Hawthorn in 2013, and gives them a player who has twice won the league’s goalkicking award for the home and away season.
In a separate deal, the Swans traded midfielder Ollie Florent to Carlton for a third-round draft pick. He will be joined by close friend Hayward, who has been holidaying in South America.

“He’s over the moon to join his good mate Ollie Florent at the Blues,” his agent D’Orazio told AFL Trade Radio.
Sydney list manager Chris Keane admitted the conversations with Hayward and Florent were difficult as the players needed to be convinced to move to Carlton.
But he denied they would need to repair relationships with players who watched their teammates be traded.
