A bodybuilding coach has been jailed for three years after he was arrested for importing illegal steroids into Australia in packages he falsely labelled as innocuous products that were sent to multiple post offices across Perth.
Nelson Lobergeier, 48, was taking part in body building competitions and coaching others while running a personal gym in Port Kennedy in 2022 when he began importing anabolic and androgenic substances from China.
Nelson Lobergeier, far left, came second in the masters category at the 2025 NPC Perth Championships two years after he was arrested for importing tier 1 goods.
During his sentencing on Thursday in Perth District Court, Judge Lisa Tovey said Lobergeier had 30 packages sent to various post office boxes registered in his name in the Rockingham area over a 12-month period in 2022 and 2023 labelled as clothing, makeup, socks, nappies, dental floss, false eyelashes and sunscreen to throw off suspicions.
But inside were thousands of grams of anabolic and androgenic substances, vials of human growth hormones and over 10,000 tablets of synthetic testosterone.
In August 2023 police searched his Port Kennedy house and found a workshop containing the substances, as well as digital scales and multiple mobile phones that revealed a commercial operation.
Lobergeier tried to insist the substances were for personal use but later pleaded guilty to 18 counts of intentionally importing tier 1 goods without approval.
Nelson Lobergeier was arrested in 2023.
The married father-of-two has a big online presence promoting his Port Kennedy gym, as well as workout supplements he created called ‘Possessed V2’ and ‘Charged’ which are advertised as “a clinical grade formula engineered for lifters who demand unmatched intensity, tunnel-vision focus, and skin-splitting pumps — with zero compromise”.
“Charged is an advanced stimulant free pre-workout, loaded with the power of nootropics to assist with performance and enhance laser sharp focus,” it says.
Nelson Lobergeier.
“Charged pump/ pre-workout is perfect for anyone sensitive to stimulants, working out late at night, or even someone who’s trying to cycle off caffeine. This pump/ pre-workout helps with an insane increase of nitric oxide, crazy vasodilation, significant boost in performance/endurance and skin splitting muscle fullness!”
The court heard Lobergeier was both a “user and a supplier” of the anabolic and androgenic substances.
Despite his arrest in 2023, Lobergeier was in April this year crowned runner-up champion in the ‘masters’ category at the 2025 NPC Perth Championships.
Three months later he was placed into custody after his bail was overturned following his pleas of guilty to all of the charges.
On Friday Judge Tovey jailed Lobergeier, who she said grew up in a Queensland cult and rarely mixed with outsiders before he cut off his family and moved to Perth in his 20s.
He was handed a three-year sentence but will only have to serve one year six months before being released on a reconnaissance order of $2000 to be of good behaviour for 12 months.
