A seven-year-old boy and a man are fighting for their lives after fire tore through a suburban home in Melbourne’s north-west.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Whitmore Place in Hillside just before 9.30pm on Tuesday.

The seven-year-old boy and a man in his thirties were seriously injured in the blaze and were taken to hospital in critical conditions.

A nine-year-old boy and a woman in her thirties were also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A toddler was uninjured during the fire.

The single-storey brick veneer home was already engulfed in flames by the time Fire Rescue Victoria crews arrived on Tuesday night.

Paramedics treated multiple patients who fled the burning home before firefighters arrived. The fire was brought under control after 36 minutes.

A community advice message was issued for nearby residents due to smoke from the fire.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire, but it is not being treated as suspicious.
