Pilot dead after small planes collide mid-air in Sydney

A pilot has died after two light planes collided mid-air near an airfield in Sydney’s south-west.

Just before midday, emergency services were called to the scene of a light plane crash near Napperfield Airfield at Wedderburn, near Appin.

Police were told two planes crashed mid-air, sending one plummeting into bushland. The body of one pilot, believed to be the only occupant of the plane, was recovered.

The other pilot was able to land safely at the airfield and was uninjured.

Two crimes scenes are being examined by NSW Police and an investigation into the cause of the crash will be undertaken by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).
