The vehicle was responding to an urgent incident, under lights and sirens, when it collided with a Mitsubishi SUV, NSW Police said in a statement.

A female constable was trapped in the vehicle for over an hour after the crash, with rescuers still working to free her.

The driver, a male constable, received minor injuries.

A 30-year-old man driving the other car is currently assisting police.

The black Mitsubishi SUV could be seen stopped on the street outside, with a man being spoken to by officers on the footpath.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said specialist rescue trucks attended the scene shortly after 3pm.

The roof was removed from the vehicle about an hour later.
