Final regulatory leash taken off Crown’s neck in Perth

The final regulatory leash has been removed from Crown’s neck in Australia after the WA government handed back the casino and resorts giant autonomy over its operations.

Crown Perth has also escaped further financial penalties from the WA government with Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia deciding against punitive action, saying he was comfortable the business had taken appropriate action to deal with the money laundering, counter-terrorism and problem-gambling issues that plunged it into crisis nationwide following investigations by Nine newspapers.

Papalia’s decision means Crown Perth is free to operate without the oversight of the independent monitor who has been keeping an eye on the casino since the Royal Commission report was finalised in 2022.

The casino’s response to that report has resulted in significant changes at Crown Perth, with more to come including mandatory use of money cards linked to players’ identities, which the casino said would help it combat money laundering and problem gambling.
