TMK Energy has achieved promising early gas flows from the seventh well at its monster Gurvantes XXXV coal seam gas project in Mongolia. The company reached gas flows exceeding 100 cubic metres per day from its Lucky Fox-07 (LF7) pilot production well within six days of production starting.

TMK says the rapid onset of gas combined with the doubling of total gas production across the seven-well Lucky Fox pilot project in the past two weeks shows it is making rapid progress towards proving commercial gas rates.

The LF7 well is now one of the highest-producing wells in the pilot area. Its swift ramp-up highlights the well’s optimal placement within the reservoir and confirms its role as a standout early gas producer.

The company says key data collected from LF7 has been integrated into an updated reservoir management plan, enabling management to plan imminent pump speed increases for nearby wells LF4 and LF6. The adjustments are expected to further reduce reservoir pressure, bringing the project closer to the critical desorption pressure needed for substantial gas flow increases.

‘The Pilot Well project is now producing at some of the highest rates we have seen to date and is expected to further increase over the coming weeks as the pumps are sped up in some of the wells.’

Based on current rates and trends of gas production, we expect this to lead to new record monthly gas production numbers in the near future,” he said.

The broader Gurvantes XXXV project spans a staggering 8400 square kilometres and holds Mongolia’s largest 2C contingent resource of 1.2 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of natural gas and a prospective resource of 5300 billion cubic feet (Bcf).

The company says its Lucky Fox pilot project is now complete, with all wells consistently producing gas. The doubling of total output since the seventh well and workover operations in mid-August reflects the combined impact of LF7’s rapid contribution and the successful reinstatement of LF6 following recent maintenance.

TMK is now busy calculating a timeline to reach critical desorption pressure - a key milestone for proving final flow rates and commerciality.

The project lies in the South Gobi Desert, less than 50 kilometres from China’s Shivee Khuren border crossing and close to important Chinese gas infrastructure. The company last month announced a strategic alliance with Beijing-based J-Energy to harness the gas specialist’s technical expertise and regional connections to quickly advance the project should commerciality be proven.

As pump speeds increase, TMK anticipates it will achieve further production gains and could potentially set new monthly gas production records.

While current rates are not yet commercially significant, the consistent output from all seven wells and LF7’s standout performance signals a solid foundation for scaling operations.

With a refined reservoir model and a clear focus on optimisation, TMK looks well-placed to drive both regional China’s and Mongolia’s cleaner-fuelled gas options forward, delivering sustainable energy solutions for an energy-hungry region.
