Case of teen accused of killing Universal Store founder returns to court

The legal team for a teenager accused of killing Universal Store co-founder Greg Josephson during a midweek house party at the 58-year-old’s multimillion-dollar Brisbane home say a significant volume of material has been disclosed by the prosecution.

Josephson was found dead at the house in the inner-northern suburb of Clayfield in June, during a party attended by dozens of teenagers.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged with murder.

Kris Jahnke, representing the accused teenager, told the Childrens Court during a hearing on Tuesday there remained outstanding evidence to be disclosed by the prosecution.

“A significant volume of material has been disclosed by the prosecution, which we are working through. There remains outstanding disclosure,” he said.

“We have no objection to a further adjournment to allow disclosure to be completed.

“In the meantime, we are progressing our preparations with the material we have.”

Jahnke said he had spoken with the prosecution, and they had agreed an adjournment for late November would be suitable.

The teenager, who remained in custody, did not appear for the hearing.

The case was adjourned to November 25.

On the night, neighbours reported hearing sirens as paramedics tried to gain entry to Josephson’s property.

His death shocked the close-knit community.

Josephson founded Universal Store in 1999 with his brother Michael. The pair sold the company for $100 million in 2018.

Josephson and his wife had been planning to sell their Clayfield property, worth $5 million, while shifting their focus to various business ventures on the Sunshine Coast.

His family requested privacy, and he was farewelled by family and friends in July.
