The man accused of running an illegal euthanasia operation by using a charity as a front to get veterinary drugs will remain in custody.

Brett Daniel Taylor, 53, is one of three people who have been charged following a police investigation into the alleged assisted suicide of a Gold Coast man, identified as David Llewellyn Bedford.

Police allege the charity was set up to euthanise beached whales as a front to secure veterinary drugs.

Police began probing the trio after Bedford’s toxicology report showed he died from acute pentobarbitone toxicity.

At a brief mention of the case on Thursday, the Southport Magistrates Court heard Taylor remained in custody.

Lawyer Billy Gee, representing Taylor, told the court he had a conference booked with his client and sought an adjournment.

“We intend to take further instructions at that time,” Gee told the court.

Taylor is facing multiple charges including aiding suicide, and trafficking and possessing dangerous drugs – pentobarbital.

Taylor did not appear in court for his case, and was remanded in custody until October 7.

Earlier this week, Taylor’s co-accused, Elaine Arch-Rowe, 81, also faced court over allegations she assisted Taylor with his end-of-life business.

Arch-Rowe was released on bail, with the court hearing how she told Taylor she “always tried to give people knowledge to access end-of-life products that will work.”

The 81-year-old also allegedly discussed how to obtain two types of fatal drug, and how “to get access to the product from the manufacturer we need to give a large percentage to be used legitimately.”

Her lawyer, Michael McMillan, told the court the case against Arch-Rowe for aiding suicide was very weak, and the charges would be fought.

Her case is scheduled to return to court on October 17.

Taylor’s father is also charged as part of the case.
