Brisbane set for another stormy day after brief reprieve

Brisbane residents are in for another stormy Saturday, with rain systems predicted to drench the region for most of the afternoon.

A large rainband was forecast to approach the coast on Saturday, bringing more thunderstorms to much of eastern and south-eastern Queensland and far north-eastern NSW.

“After a brief reprieve on Friday, wet and stormy conditions will return on Saturday afternoon,” meteorologist Angus Hines said.

Conditions are forecast to worsen from about 3pm onwards, before the storms peak about 6pm. The system is then expected to ease from about 7pm.

“The main threat on Saturday is that these thunderstorms could bring areas of heavy rain, which may lead to flash flooding,” Hines said. “Down in the south-east, there could also be some damaging wind and large hail.”

Apart from the slight chance of late afternoon thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday, no rain is forecast for the following week.

Temperatures across the state continue to be several degrees above November’s average, with 10 days of giant hail since July.

While the rainband hit the western part of the state earlier on Saturday, temperatures in those regions could exceed 40 degrees for the rest of the day.

As temperatures warm up heading into the new year, it is likely the state will experience heavy rainfall with less hail.

Power outages in south-east Queensland are now down to just under 650 following a week of widespread storm damage.

On Monday night, storms knocked more than 100,000 properties off the grid. The following night, an additional 9500 homes lost power across the region.

More than 15,000 homes remained without power on Wednesday, with only 200 restored by Thursday.
