Wallabies player ratings: How the men in gold fared against Argentina

1 week ago 3

6. Rob Valetini: Grew into the game and made a number of line-bending runs. His 29 metres was the most of any Wallabies forward. Makes such a difference when he is in the team but he’s had better performances for Australia. His knock-on in the first half was uncharacteristic. 6/10

7. Fraser McReight: Won a turnover inside three minutes but had it overturned due to a Tupou penalty. Otherwise, steady and industrious. Making the most of his long-awaited chance in the Wallabies No.7 jersey after so long behind Michael Hooper. 8/10

8. Harry Wilson: Magnificent on so many levels. Ran for 24 metres, beat four defenders, made 11 tackles and threw two offloads. Produced a barnstorming carry before White’s try and later a cheeky kick and chargedown. Showed authority and leadership as captain in the tense finish when a draw was there for the taking. 9/10

9. Nic White: Scored Australia’s opener in the 23rd minute. Kicking was accurate, sparking contests, though he lacked his usual influence before being replaced just after half-time. 7/10

10. Tom Lynagh: A mixed bag. Misfired with a missed touch finder and defensive lapse for Argentina’s first try. Failed a second HIA – a concern for the 22-year-old. 5/10

11. Corey Toole: A return of 21 metres was not exactly what Australia would have hoped for from their speedster. Pumas did well to nullify Toole. Turned the ball over twice. Should get another game against the Pumas. 6/10

12. Len Ikitau: Busy in attack with 12 carries for 36 metres and four defenders beaten. Set up Suaalii’s first try with a great offload but there were a few errors in his game. Combination with Suaalii is flourishing. Threw the last pass for three Australian tries. 8/10

13. Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii: Without Suaalii, the Wallabies probably don’t win. Scored tries No.2 and No.3 of his Test career, which isn’t even a year old. Is loving the physicality in defence and on Saturday it was an area of his game that was much more polished than in South Africa. Still prone to some issues at the breakdown but Australia are getting bang for their buck. Playing a huge role in rugby’s resurgence. 8.5/10

14. Max Jorgensen: Beat more defenders (five) than any Wallabies player. Some clever kicking put the Wallabies in auspicious field positions. Looks so settled at Test level, even though there weren’t any major highlights from the 21-year-old. 8/10

15. Andrew Kellaway: Two turnovers and a poor pass to Toole were blemishes, but Kellaway ran for 96 metres – nearly three times more than any teammate. A steady night at fullback. 6.5/10

16. Brandon Paenga-Amosa: Busy with ball in hand – has an underrated passing game – and visible across the park. His enthusiasm was obvious in Bell’s try celebration. 7.5/10

17. Angus Bell: Penalised in the 72nd minute for a side entry into a ruck but came up with a match-winning try when the Wallabies needed it. Should start next week in front of friends and family in Sydney. Carried strongly for 26 metres in 40 minutes. 8.5/10

18. Zane Nonggorr: Positive around the breakdown and at scrum time. Solid impact. 7/10

19. Jeremy Williams: Energetic cameo and physical in contact. 7/10

20. Carlo Tizzano: Threw himself into the collisions. Gave away a late penalty for not rolling away that nearly cost Australia. 6/10

21. Tate McDermott: Kicked well to relieve pressure, passed crisply and probed Argentina’s defence. Orchestrated the build-up to Suaalii’s second try and managed the closing stages effectively. 8/10

22. James O’Connor: Below the standards he set on Australia’s recent tour of South Africa. A fumble and a kick dead summed up a patchy outing. However, O’Connor’s sideline kick to level scores was super important, particularly after his efforts in Cape Town. 5.5/10

23. Filipo Daugunu: N/A
