WA Police hunt fake cops who stole jewellery, cash during bogus search warrant

WA Police are hunting two men who they allege posed as police officers and used a bogus warrant to steal tens of thousands dollars worth of jewellery and cash – including a Rolex watch – from a Perth home.

Police say the two men were caught on CCTV driving up to a home on Mercury Street in Carlisle about midnight on August 29.

Footage shows the men, dressed in dark blue pants, dark blue undershirts and vests with “POLICE” written on the back, walk down the driveway to the home where they allegedly told the two occupants they were officers and produced a fake search warrant before being let inside.

Detective First Class Constable Andre Ferreira said the men spent about 40 to 50 minutes inside the property and were able to make off with “high-value items” including cash and jewellery.

Ferreira said the two men did not threaten or hurt the occupants during the “search warrant”, but the victims eventually reported what had happened to police.

He said WA Police established the two men were not officers, and the fake search warrant had not been left at the premises.

Ferreira said he believed the operation had been targeted.

“These kinds of acts are extremely concerning to WA Police … our community members deserve to feel safe in their own homes,” he said.

Police said information currently indicated one of the people in the house knew the men, while the other did not.

“We have thrown a significant amount of resources into the investigation and will not stop until these people are apprehended and before the courts,” Ferreira said.

Ferreira said despite this information, police had since exhausted “all lines of inquiry” and appealed to the public for help.

“The first male is described as being approximately 45 to 55 years old, of medium build and clean-shaven,” a police spokesperson said,

“The second male is … approximately 30 to 40 years old, of slim build and clean-shaven.”

Ferreira called for anyone who had dash cam vision from around the Mercury and Planet Street in Carlisle in the early hours of August 29 to contact police, and anyone who noticed a white SUV or people seen to be acting suspiciously around the same time to reach out.

He also said members of the public should be aware WA Police would always carry identification on themselves, either through their badge or a lanyard.
