Maduro to face New York court today - the latest

Ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores will appear in a New York court in about an hour - at 4am (AEDT). We’ll bring you updates from the courtroom, key legal developments, and reactions from Washington and around the world.

Here is a recap of key points:

  • Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were extradited to the US on Saturday night following his capture in an audacious military campaign by US forces that had been months in the planning.
  • They were escorted under heavy guard to the courthouse precinct in Manhattan earlier today.
  • They are expected to be indicted on numerous charges including narco-terrorism and conspiracy to import cocaine, according to an unsealed indictment.
  • The dramatic capture has emboldened Donald Trump who implied last night that he could take military action in Colombia and Greenland, and told Mexico to get its “act together”.
  • The United Nations on Tuesday AEDT condemned the US strike, saying it was very concerned about the precedent it may set.

UN condemns US strike

The United Nations has condemned the US attack on Venezuela, saying it violated international law and could fuel instability in the region.

It said it sets a concerning precedent that could make violent conflicts more likely.

“I remain deeply concerned that rules of international law have not been respected,” Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo said on Monday morning in a speech to the organisation’s Security Council at an emergency meeting.

The UN’s political chief was speaking on behalf of Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Her comments reflect the broad concern among Washington’s allies following the stunning US military action, as well as President Donald Trump’s fresh comments following the raid about seizing Greenland.

The fall from power can be swift as these pictures prove. Handcuffed and surrounded by heavily armed agents and officers, it was a stark contrast to the freedom Maduro once exercised as Venezuela’s president.
