For decades, wearing underwear outside was a regular practice for Madonna – and for those of us who’d forgotten it was garbage-collection day and could suddenly hear the truck coming down the street. Madonna’s lacy lingerie as outerwear was entirely intentional, of course; the rest of us were just wearing whatever T-shirt and knickers we’d fallen asleep wearing. Now, though, it’s perfectly acceptable, outside office hours, to strip down to your underwear – preferably, a pair of cool, cotton men’s boxer shorts – and get really comfortable.
Actor Paul Mescal first championed the trend for Gucci on the red carpet back in June last year, then models Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber quickly adopted the look. Now everyone’s doing it. Choose a baggy fit, experiment with a clashing print top and layer, if needed, with a jacket or blazer. As a final touch, to make it known that you’re actually chasing compliments – not the garbos – add elevated accessories, such as smart sneakers or loafers and statement jewellery or a scarf.
Finally, importantly, don’t forget to check your fly buttons. Then get ready to look and feel cool.
