An underground mine explosion has killed two people in western NSW on Tuesday morning.
Emergency services were called to the mine on Endeavor Road, Cobar, about 700 kilometres north-west of Sydney, about 3:45am after reports two people had been critically injured in the explosion.
Police officers were told one man had been confirmed dead when they arrived at the scene, while a woman died after being brought back to the surface.
She was raised to the surface with another woman, who has been airlifted to hospital to be treated for hearing damage and shock.
Cobar Shire mayor Jarrod Marsden said the event was “absolutely tragic” for the local community.
“The most valuable thing in a mine are the miners, and two families won’t see their loved ones again,” Marsden said.
