Three men have been arrested and charged with murder over the shooting death of a teenager in Fitzroy.

Victoria Police charged the men over the January 3 shooting death of 16-year-old Ater (Elia) Good at the intersection of Brunswick and King William Streets near where he lived, in the early hours of the morning.

Nineteen-year-old Heidelberg West man Abdijalil Abdirahman Warsame and 20-year-old Bundoora man Shakiib Farah Abdulkadir were arrested and charged with murder on January 11, police said. They were remanded in custody to appear in court in June.

Homicide squad detectives swooped on Melbourne Airport early on Monday morning to arrest 21-year-old Heidelberg man, Omar Omar, who was then also charged. He was refused bail and also remanded in custody until June.

Collingwood All Stars basketball club held a gathering for those who knew Good on Wednesday at Collingwood College. He had played for the club in domestic and representative teams since 2018, starting in the under-9s.

“Elia was a quiet boy who loved basketball and worked hard to do the best he could for his teams,” the club’s general manager Megan Rouse said. “(We) mourn the tragic passing of another of our young players.”

Ater Good was the eldest child in his family and a capable basketballer.

The club was already grieving the horrific death of another of its talented players, 15-year-old Dau Akueng, who was killed in a knife attack in Cobblebank in Melbourne’s outer west in September, along with his 12-year-old friend Chol Achiek.

Police found Good with life-threatening injuries at about midnight, just metres from the Fitzroy Police Station, which was closed to the public.

Speaking to the media on January 3, Detective Acting Inspector Brett Meadows said an officer was inside the police station when he heard two gunshots.

“He went out to investigate and located a male on the footpath with head injuries consistent with a gunshot wound,” Meadows said.

The officer rendered first aid, Meadows said, but the youth died at the scene.

CCTV recorded two young people walking near the police station before shots were fired.

On a crowdfunding page set up to help finance funeral expenses, Ater’s father, Phillip Good, said his son “was deeply loved by his family, cherished by his friends, and held a special place in the hearts of everyone who knew him”.
