These pants have a chequered past, and they’re about to be everywhere this summer

Since Barbara Eden played the titular character in the sitcom I Dream of Jeannie in the 1960s, harem pants have been on a downward trajectory. Adopting the unpalatable nickname “poo catchers”, and associated with the 1992 Disney adaptation of Aladdin and 1990s celebrities including Paula Abdul and U Can’t Touch This singer MC Hammer, pop culture hasn’t helped their reputation, either.

So, can a garment have a redemptive arc, even one as steep as this? Fashion says yes, it can.

On the recent European runways, harem pants have received widespread attention. At Zimmermann in Paris, billowing paisley-printed silk georgette mixed with iterations in lace or utility parachute fabric, while at the home-of-boho, Chloé, designer Chemena Kamali gave the silhouette office cred in plain shades of butter yellow, apricot and cream. Locally, look at Bianca Spender for a harem-inspired alternative to a more structured suit pant.

Stylist Simone Farrugia, who has worked with Missy Higgins and Melissa Leong, says the harem pant’s appeal aligns with our desire for softer layers, after years of structured tailoring. “This is the warm-weather friend of barrel-leg jeans,” says Farrugia. “I can see these taking on a really casual vibe for Aussie summer, with thongs and tanks and tees.”

When it comes to styling, the key is to add street cred, and not look like you’re off to an Arabian Nights fancy-dress party. Do this by “grounding” the pants with a man-style waistcoat, biker-style leather jacket or heavy accessories such as a thick belt. And when it comes to shoes, stick to flats. If you must wear a heel, make it a platform thong.

Despite their voluminous silhouette, Farrugia has good news: the harem pant is flattering on almost all body types. “The balloon shape shows off the ankle and waist,” she says. “Style with a more fitted or cropped top to balance the overall silhouette. I’m going to try them with a silk shirt and long pendant necklace and embrace that ’70s Chloé-girl vibe.”

Indeed, it’s a whole new world.
