Aussie tail shows how good these batting conditions are

I can confirm from Adelaide Oval that Mitchell Starc was seeing it like a football before he went out.

Starc’s second consecutive half century has already pushed Australia close to 350, but he and Nathan Lyon have shown they were comfortable in the batting conditions this morning.

WICKET: Starc is out

Archer has bounced back from the bad start to snare the wicket of Starc.

He got a ball to angle back in and Starc clipped it into the stumps.

But has the damage been done? England need this last wicket and to off this ground.

Starc finished on 54.

AUS 9-348

‘They are giving him Christmas presents’: Starc brings up 50

Starc has plundered Archer and than Carse in the opening two overs, bringing up his 50 in the last over with some delightful back-foot punch shots.

“They’re giving him absolute Christmas presents at the moment.”

Simon Katich not mincing his words on SEN at the moment after England’s opening two overs go for 18 runs. Jofra Archer bowling “throwdowns”.

Starc has 18 wickets at 14 and 143 runs at 71.5 in this series.

Starc blasts two boundaries

Mitchell Starc has taken the stick to Archer in the first over of the day.

He has hit two fours and given Australia more invaluable runs.

Archer didn’t look happy at all.

But on the positive side for England, it might show that this wicket is getting even better for batting.

AUS 8-334 with Starc on 41 and Lyon on 0.

Press box already cooking

We’re in for a stinker in Adelaide.

The press box window is open and it’s hot already (33 degrees).

Australia would love to get up around the 350 mark but keep in mind England have a ball that’s only three overs old.

Mitchell Starc’s been in great form this series and Nathan Lyon’s a more than handy No.10. England must bat the day, otherwise they might as well give up the urn once again.

A great crowd in again.

Roasting conditions in Adelaide

It will be a boiling hot day in Adelaide today with the BOM forecasting a max temperature of 39.

The BOM has the current temperature at 33.9 and dry, expect that heat to remain high right past stumps tonight.

If you are out and about at the Adelaide Oval, make sure you slip, slop and slap. Same for those in parts of Victoria and New South Wales experiencing hot conditions.

Play is about to begin with Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon at the crease.

Lee challenges Archer to fire early

By Roy Ward

Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee has thrown the challenge down to Jofra Archer to knock over the Australian tail early this morning.

“England have got to go bang bang this morning and take two wickets,” Lee said on Fox Cricket.

“If I’m Jofra Archer, I am warming up in the back nets [ready] to bowl the [first] over flat out.

“If you do the hard work up front, then you can have rest under the airconditioning.”

Snicko drama fallout: review reinstated

The word from Adelaide is that England will get back a review after the DRS debacle on Wednesday.

England spoke with match referee Jeff Crowe after play, who has since agreed that a fault occurred and handed the review back to England.

It means the tourists will start Thursday with two reviews left, rather than one.

The third party in charge of providing “Snicko” to broadcasters, BBG Sports, made an operator error when Alex Carey was on 72. The operator put up the sound on the stump microphone at the bowler’s end, instead of Carey’s end, hence why the big spike appeared for his caught behind.

While Carey may still have got an edge, the wrong graphic was shown and was the reason why it was out of sync.

BBG Sports founder and head of technology Warren Brennan said the company took “full responsibility” for the error that led to Carey’s reprieve.

Cricket Australia boss Todd Greenberg is addressing the incident on SEN at the moment.

“In my view that’s not good enough. We’re asking a lot of questions of the provider,” Greenberg said.

Carey just spoke on Seven and, once again, said he hit it. “A few little cherries on the inside edge, it was a great noise wasn’t it?” Carey said. “As a wicketkeeper, I definitely would have gone up. A bit of luck is always nice, isn’t it?”

The latest on Steve Smith

By Daniel Brettig

Steve Smith saw a specialist on Wednesday for further investigation of the vestibular issues that affected him in the lead-up to this game.

He is still staying in Adelaide with the team and is hopeful of playing in Melbourne, but it’s not yet clear when he will resume training.

You can read more here on Smith’s health issue.
