Spaniard Raul Fernandez broke through for his first MotoGP win, triumphing at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix after local hope Jack Miller’s race ended in agony.

After finishing second in Saturday’s sprint, Fernandez put in a flawless ride at Phillip Island to finally end his MotoGP drought in his 76th race by winning from fifth on the grid.

The 24-year-old took the chequered flag 1.4 seconds ahead of Italian Fabio Di Giannantonio and fellow Spaniard Alex Marquez.

For Miller, who qualified for the race in third spot on the grid, there was heartbreak on lap six when he lost control of his Yamaha.

An accomplished Moto2 rider with eight wins in 2021, Fernandez has struggled since stepping up to MotoGP in 2022.

After one poor season with KTM, Fernandez has been with Aprilia for the past three years, while Miller grabbed third in 2019, but hasn’t gone close to getting on the podium since – retiring in 2022, before finishing seventh and 11th in the previous two years.

Pole-sitter Marco Bezzechi was always going to be up against it due to having to serve a double long-lap penalty.

Bezzecchi was penalised for his role in the recent carnage in Indonesia that led to newly crowned world champion Marc Marquez suffering serious injuries.

Marquez was unable to ride this weekend as he recovers from the crash at Mandalika a fortnight ago.

Earlier in the day, Senna Agius became the first Australian rider to win a Moto2 race at the Phillip Island grand prix.

The 20-year-old from Sydney secured a historic victory, taking the chequered flag ahead of Colombian David Alonso and Brazilian Diogo Moreira.

After finishing third last year, Aguis pulled off an emotional win.

“The most mentally-demanding race because the laps felt so long,” Aguis said.

“The conditions were polar opposite to Friday, so we had no grip out there.

“The wind was crazy and I had to adjust all the braking zones.

“Found some good speed in the middle, and they were the longest laps, but I can’t believe I got it done.”

Aguis was told by his team if he had speed in the first five laps then he would be able to pull away from the rest of the grid.

He responded to them: “It’s not that easy”.

“But that’s exactly what happened,” Aguis said.

“I’ve never had that much mental concentration and pressure just to stay in my own race and keep my head in the game.

“It was long, but super rewarding.”

Agius broke through for his maiden Moto2 win in May when he tasted victory at the famous Silverstone track in England.

“A victory at home is incredible,” he said.
