Sam Kerr has shared a glimpse of her and Kristie Mewis’ wedding day, an event fans have dubbed “soccer’s royal wedding”.
The Matildas captain posted two photos of herself with her new spouse on the day of their nuptials, accompanying the post with the simple caption, “Wifey”. The first showed the couple sharing a kiss, while the second was clearly taken later at night when the party started. Mewis, a former West Ham United player, is captured sitting atop Kerr’s shoulders as they dance and sing.

The pair wed in front of about 120 guests at Swan Valley’s Villa Dionysus, a luxurious private estate a short drive from Perth’s CBD, on New Year’s Eve. A video filmed by social media agency Hype Up Studio and reposted on Instagram by Kerr shows the ceremony took place in the villa’s front courtyard, where stately columns and arches framed the newlyweds.
In the comments section, one fan described it as “the royal wedding for football fans”.
Speaking to Vogue Australia, the couple said they wanted everything to be simple and chic. “We wanted it to feel warm and fun with lots of good food and comfort. Oh, and it’s New Year’s Eve, so we wanted it to be a great party,” they said.
This included the dress-code, which appeared to be black-and-white – matching the chequered tiles surrounding the villa’s grand pool. Their guests – including Matildas players Steph Catley, Alanna Kennedy, Emily van Egmond, Caitlin Foord and Mackenzie Arnold, as well as Irish footballer Katie McCabe – wore sleek or structured black ensembles, paired with delicate white parasols to shield them from the Perth sun.
Kerr, meanwhile, donned a single-breasted black tuxedo by Hugo Boss. “Sam’s accessories were understated and simple. She didn’t want anything flashy – just something classic and comfortable,” Mewis told Vogue.
The couple’s son Jagger, who was born in May, accompanied Kerr down the aisle wearing a matching black suit.
As for Mewis’ own ensemble, she wore two gowns. The first was an off-shoulder, beaded and semi-sheer dress from Berta, and the second – the “party dress” – was a strapless look by Kyha Studios.
“My [first] dress was my dream dress,” Mewis said. “I saw it and knew I couldn’t move forward until I tried it on, and when I did, I knew that was my wedding dress without question.”
Paired with her first statement dress, the bride wore Rene Caovilla shoes, encrusted with Swarovski crystals and boasting the designer’s signature sculptural straps. Her flowing lacey veil, meanwhile, brought a more traditional bridal aesthetic to her look, contrasting the contemporary style of her dress.
Photos taken by Vogue Australia show the couple dancing up a storm later in the evening – Mewis shoeless, the pair arm-in-arm and sparklers going off behind them.
Reflecting on the day, Mewis said she was still in disbelief over how faultless it was. “We didn’t expect it to look so perfect and beautiful … It was exactly what we imagined and more. Seeing each other for the first time down the aisle – it was the most special moment.”
