First home buyers won the keys to a Richmond house for $1.13 million at auction on Saturday – a pleasant sale for the vendor, who also bought the home as his first.
The two-bedroom brick house at 25 Brighton Street had some original features and was listed with a quoted price range of $900,000 to $990,000, BigginScott selling agent and auctioneer Andrew Crotty said.
“It’s a red brick, and it was built in the 1930s or maybe the late ’40s,” he said.
“The kitchen and bathroom were basic but usable, and everyone had been thinking about getting their hands on it and maybe doing some renovations down the track.”
The auction began on a bid at the bottom of the range and was slow. Crotty said three bidders eventually pushed the price $190,000 above the vendors’ $940,000 reserve.
“It was a good result for an owner. He had it for about 30 years and it was his first house, and now it’s someone else’s first home,” Crotty said.
It was one of 1278 auctions scheduled for Saturday in Melbourne.
In The Basin, east of Bayswater, a weatherboard house sold under the hammer for $1.03 million.
The renovated three-bedroom house at 1242 Mountain Highway attracted six bidders, Ray White selling agent Blayze Fatchen said. He listed the home for sale with a quoted price range of $820,000 to $899,000.

“It’s a character weatherboard, these owners purchased it to live in but decided they wanted to live closer to family in the city. Because they purchased it to live in, it was nice and done up,” Fatchen said.
The auction began on a bid of $800,000,and Fatchen said the contest was quick.
“There were just two bidders at the start and many people came in around $900,000 … total time before we knocked it down and sold was seven minutes,” he said. “There were only two bidders fighting it out above $1 million.”
Fatchen said the reserve was set at the top of the price range, and the buyers were a young couple.
