Human remains believed to belong to a snorkeller who went missing off WA’s coast on New Year’s Day have washed ashore in Lancelin.

A police search was launched for Wen Ren “Walter” Gu on the afternoon of January 1 when he failed to return to shore after going crayfishing with friends at Ledge Point.

Air and sea rescue resources were mobilised, but the search for the 32-year-old was scaled back the following day.

On Tuesday, police were alerted to human remains that had washed ashore on Fence Reef Beach, north of Ledge Point, about 7.20am.

“Formal identification is yet to be completed but it is believed to be a 32-year-old man who went missing on Thursday 1 January 2026,” a WA Police spokeswoman said.

“His death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.”

On Monday, a friend of Gu’s made a heartfelt post on social media urging for the search to continue and saying they did not want to give up hope.

“If you or someone you know were at Ledge Point Beach that day, saw someone rescue or pick up an Asian male, have any photos, videos, dashcam footage, or related information, please send me a direct message,” the message read.

“Any small piece of information could be crucial.”

Ledge Point, about an hour north of Perth, is a popular holiday destination, with a small permanent population of about 230 people.
