You might have noticed that the second weekend of the season delivered new narratives for tipping consideration. Manchester City, last week deemed in title contention thanks to their season-opening win over Wolves, are now apparently back out of the title race after being shown up by Tottenham. By the end of the third round, however, Pep Guardiola might be back in with a shot if he can oversee a rebound win at Brighton.

But the weekend’s main drawcard is Arsenal’s trip to Liverpool for a high-profile meeting between last season’s runners-up and champions, and also two sides on a maximum of six points. Eberechi Eze is set to make his Gunners debut, while Reds striker Hugo Ekitike is looking to add to his record of three goals from three games across all competitions for his new club.

Spurs, the only other team with two from two, is also yet to concede a single goal under Thomas Frank, and Ange Postecoglou’s replacement will try to keep it that way when hosting a spirited Bournemouth outfit who have already pushed Liverpool to the brink and beaten Wolves.

In the crisis department, Manchester United welcomes Burnley three days after the embarrassing Carabao Cup exit to fourth-tier Grimsby Town, which has left manager Ruben Amorim on the brink.

Last-placed West Ham, meanwhile, are fresh off eight goals conceded in opening losses to Sunderland and Chelsea, and still raw from captain Jarrod Bowen’s clash with fans following their own mid-week Carabao Cup defeat to Wolves. The Hammers visit Nottingham Forest hoping to capitalise on the tension surrounding manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s fast-deteriorating relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis.
