Police arrest second teenager after fatal Ascot Vale stabbing

Police have arrested a second teenager in relation to the fatal stabbing of a man in Melbourne’s inner north-west on Sunday.

A 40-year-old man died in hospital after being found with stab wounds near the intersection of Maribyrnong and Union roads in Ascot Vale on Sunday afternoon.

Officers charged an 18-year-old man, Alambs Mohmmed, of no fixed address, on Monday over the fatal stabbing.

On Wednesday police said they had apprehended a 16-year-old boy in Carlton at around 11am.

The arrest came two days after police confirmed they were actively searching for a second offender.

Officers have taken the 16-year-old to hospital for treatment for a pre-existing hand injury, after which he will be interviewed.

Mohmmed faced court on Monday charged with intentionally causing injury, affray, escaping custody and theft. The court heard he was meant to be in custody at the time of the alleged offending.

He did not apply for bail and is due to face court again on December 18.

Witnesses told this masthead they saw two offenders chasing a man up and down either side of Maribyrnong Road, before fighting him under a tree as bystanders tried to intervene.

Officers said they were not looking for anyone else in relation to the alleged stabbing.
