Plant-clad luxury apartment block revealed for inner-Brisbane

Plans to bulldoze a small Brisbane shopping strip and build greenery-covered luxury apartments have been revealed.

The proposed complex would be built on a corner block in Hamilton, with 12 two- and three-bedroom apartments across four storeys, underground parking, and a rooftop terrace.

If approved, the development at 53 Racecourse Road would also feature a resort pool, hot spa, “wellness facilities”, and landscaped green space.

Renders of the proposal show green and red plants in concrete tubs cascading down the building from balconies on each level.

A bakery, bar and several food outlets are also pictured on the ground floor.

The 1205-square-metre block, about five kilometres from the CBD, is currently the site of a small, single-storey shopping hub with a Thai and Italian restaurant.

The building’s red-brick facade is a nod to St Augustine’s Church, which is opposite the site.

Developer Fortis said the design was inspired by historic buildings in the area, with the red-brick facade a tribute to landmarks such as the historic St Augustine’s Church just metres away.

“We’re fortunate to be working with one of the precinct’s most prominent corner sites, offering city and river views, and a unique opportunity to create something truly special for the area,” general manager Dan Boman said in a statement.

“Rather than imposing a building onto the site, we’ve taken the time to understand the neighbourhood and create something that fits naturally into its local context.”

Fortis is also behind the planned conversion of a decommissioned aged care home into luxury flats in New Farm.

In the Hamilton renders, a new white four-storey building can be seen next to the corner unit block. However, no plans have been lodged for 63 Racecourse Road.

Koichi Takada Architects designed the new building, which is now before Brisbane City Council.
