The closed-down Hilton Hotel has reopened under new ownership, ahead of major renovations to the CBD site.

Now branded InterContinental Brisbane, the hotel opened to guests on Tuesday.

The building at 190 Elizabeth Street, which backs on to Queen Street Mall, was designed by architect Harry Seidler and opened in 1987.

Across 25 floors, it comprises 319 hotel rooms, 19 meeting rooms, a ballroom, an outdoor lap pool and a gym.

The InterContinental website says stays now start at about $320 a night, with the most expensive suites in excess of $550.

“We are incredibly proud to now have a footprint in one of Australia’s most dynamic and fast-growing cities,” manager Shaun Parsons said in a statement.

“To be part of Brisbane’s transformation ahead of the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics is a privilege.”

The hotel is earmarked for a complete restoration – expected to take about two years – from 2026 as part of a wider upgrade of the Wintergarden complex, which is overseen by ISPT.

When this masthead heard reports last year that the Hilton could be vacating the site, representatives for the company repeatedly insisted they were inaccurate.

When future bookings were suspended, general manager Chris Partridge cited “routine negotiations” for the decision.

Construction of a 42-storey office block at 150 Elizabeth Street, on a vacant portion of the ISPT site, was announced in 2023. Building is due to begin this year.

The new office tower will be partially elevated above the Wintergarden car park and will eventually be integrated with the InterContinental Hotel’s existing rooftop space.

Development of Spring Hill’s 129-room Hilton Garden Inn is underway. It is expected to cost about $50 million.
