Dempsey ends run of Suns goals

The Cats finally break through for a goal. It took them until almost the 30-minute mark, ending a run of eight goals for the Suns.

Ollie Dempsey, one of many Cats having a quiet night, was the drought-breaker. The margin is down to 79 points at three-quarter time.

The match is well and truly over. The most interest in the last quarter is over the margin – can the Suns win by 100 points or more? Based on what we’ve seen tonight, it’s highly likely.

Andrew almost takes mark of the year contender

Mac Andrew has just dropped a car, or whatever prize they get for the mark of the year.

He was airborne with a second lift as well from the pack, but he could not pull the ball down with him.

Not that the Suns will mind. They’ve just booted another ridiculously easy goal. The Suns are getting out the front of stoppage, leaving their opponents flailing in their wake. They’re all running forward of the ball because they know they’ll get on the end of it. John Noble is the beneficiary this time, kicking his second goal on the run.

Almost 30 minutes into the third term, the Suns are up by 85 points and a triple-figure margin is up for grabs.

Suns post their ton – already

We’re well into training drill territory now.

The Suns were able to run the ball through the middle of the ground with no pressure to kick the ball deep inside 50, where they have an extra number at the contest.

Poor Connor O’Sullivan, in his second season of senior footy, thought he was under so much pressure he knocked the ball out of play and was penalised for insufficient intent. Leo Lombard then made no mistake curling the set shot snap for the Suns’ 15th goal.

Somehow, the Cats have embarrassed themselves more than the Blues did last night.

And there’s more. Ben King’s just booted his fourth. It’s 73 points at the 19-minute mark of the third quarter.

A third goal for Petracca

Christian Petracca, the Gold Coast No.3, has his third goal.

That was ridiculously easy by the Suns. Any one of three players could have kicked that goal.

The Cats cannot do anything right. Yes, they have a few outs, but you wonder what Patrick Dangerfield, Jeremy Cameron and Tyson Stengle could have added given they’re all forwards, and it’s in the midfield where they are getting shredded.

Just 10 minutes into the third quarter, the margin is out to 54 points.

As Peter Ryan has observed on the Gold Coast: This is vintage Petracca on display here tonight. He’s kicked three and this is heading towards a 100-point thumping.

Half-century for the Suns

Daniel Rioli streams through 50 and … misses. The margin is out to 50 points.

The Suns opened the scoring in the second half through a fourth goal to Bailey Humphrey, who received a handball from Christian Petracca at stoppage. They are proving a dangerous combination.

Half-time: The Suns’ big guns are firing

Tanner Bruhn has been the Cats’ best player in the first half in his first game back after missing 2025 when he was stood down while facing sexual assault charges, which were later withdrawn after a witness admitted he lied to police.

Bruhn has 18 disposals and breaks the lines with creative ball use. He is fighting a lone hand, however, as the Suns’ on-ballers are dominating with Christian Petracca, Noah Anderson and Touk Miller dynamic while Bailey Humphrey is creating headaches for the Cats’ defenders.

Long piles on the pain

That last goal sums up the half for Geelong.

Connor O’Sullivan had the opportunity to clear the ball out of defence but fluffed the kick. He regained possession moments later but, outnumbered three to one, coughed it up again for Ben Long to snap truly.

This was Tom Atkins’ read of the game moments after the half-time siren.

“[We’re] probably beaten around the contest. They beat us to that ball and have been stronger in the tackle.”

Atkins said the Cats had been “too cute” with the ball, “finding in-between layer kicks when we can go long or kick short”.

A game-high lead for Gold Coast

The Suns are making the Cats look like a bottom-four side right now.

The Cats simply cannot handle the power, speed and physicality of the Suns, who are running all over them.

The margin is out to 42 points, a game-high lead, after Touk Miller’s goal.

Alarm bells for the Cats

This match is threatening to become a blowout. Geelong have no avenues to goal and the Suns, by contrast, have plenty of them. The Cats’ pressure is below par. They don’t look as though they are handling the humidity.
