Rental vacancy rate at a standstill

By Felicity Caldwell

Queensland’s rental market remains at a standstill, with the statewide vacancy rate stuck at 1 per cent.

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland’s (REIQ) September report shows tight conditions dominate across the state, with 38 of the 50 regions recording vacancy rates of 1 per cent or less, far below the healthy range of 2.6 to 3.5 per cent.

Measles warning for Brisbane concert-goers

By Julius Dennis

Brisbane Jelly Roll fans have been told to stay alert for measles after three attendees of the October 24 Brisbane Entertainment Centre show were diagnosed with the disease.

Queensland Health released a public health alert last night warning people who attended the American singer’s show to watch for symptoms for up to three weeks.

Symptoms include fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough and red eyes. After a few days, a red rash will develop, often starting on the face.

Anyone who thinks they have measles should organise to get tested but avoid public places.

Two other cases unrelated to the show were confirmed in the Central Queensland West Moreton regions this week.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Catherine McDougall said measles cases were on the rise.

“Currently, we’re seeing higher numbers of measles cases not only in Queensland, but across the country. In Queensland, a total of 30 measles cases have been reported this year to date,” she said.

Weather into the weekend

The cloudy week in Brisbane so far appears to be a harbinger of wet to come, with rain forecast for the weekend and the potential for a storm on Saturday.

In the meantime, we can expect a cool – humidity is fairly low, so it will feel that way – Thursday with a top temperature of 27 degrees. Tomorrow is set to be even cooler in the River City.

Here’s the outlook into the weekend and beyond:

In a five-hour party room meeting yesterday, about 60 per cent of Liberals spoke in favour of rejecting the party’s pledge to reach net zero emissions by 2050. According to sources in the room, about 30 Liberals spoke in favour of dumping net zero, about 20 wanted to keep it, and a few were on the fence. Opposition Leader Sussan Ley said it was a “great meeting” as she left the party room.

Convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein told his close associate Ghislaine Maxwell that Donald Trump “spent hours at my house” with one of his victims, and told a journalist that Trump “knew about the girls”, according to new documents released by Democrats in the US Congress. The US president, who was friends with Epstein in the 1990s but says the pair fell out in the 2000s, has always emphatically denied knowledge of Epstein and Maxwell’s sex-trafficking operations.

Labor is pushing ahead with plans to make tech giants pay for Australian journalism, forcing them to hand over millions of dollars from their domestic revenue to local media companies or pay a higher amount in financial penalties.
