US President Donald Trump has announced that former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani will be awarded the presidential medal of freedom, one day after Giuliani was hospitalised for injuries suffered in a serious car crash in New Hampshire.
Giuliani was a moderate Republican who won accolades for his response to the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, but turned increasingly partisan in later years and became Trump’s personal lawyer during his efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat to Joe Biden.

“I am pleased to announce that Rudy Giuliani, the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot, will receive THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM, our Country’s highest civilian honor,” Trump wrote on social media.
