Airline snares a slice of the tour-booking pie

Fiji’s tourism industry is based on resorts. Boutique hotels are a rarity, and the capital, Suva, soaks up the best of what is available, such as the Five Princes and the Grand Pacific Hotel.

So it’s no surprise that most tours and experiences are booked through the properties.

The Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, for instance, has a “leisure concierge” on hand to help guests plan their off-property pursuits. (Others probably call that a “tour desk”.)

But you only have to glance at online chats to see the gripes about discovering preferred products are booked out when trying to clinch them in this manner. Others complain that booking through resorts means higher prices. And there are those who feel the range of experiences offered through resorts is limited.

Now, the national airline is offering a new way to book: Fiji Airways has launched its own online tour-booking platform.

Tours.fijiairways.com is an e-shop for activities in Fiji and across other destinations in the airline’s network.

In Australia, this covers Sydney and Melbourne, and in the US, San Francisco and Los Angeles, as well as Honolulu and Oahu in Hawaii.

Qantas, of course, has its longstanding Qantas Holidays arm, and a partnership, Qantas Tours, with TripADeal, for multi-day touring and cruises. Other airlines, such as Malaysian and Singapore, offer a similar service to the Fiji Airways platform, for activities that can be undertaken in a morning, an afternoon or a full day while at a destination.

For Fiji Airways, the new booking site means a modicum of control over what its passengers experience. It may even offer savings. The company says it’s using AI to “cut through the clutter” to offer the best-rated experiences.

The experiences include the Whale Tales Day Cruise from Port Denarau, under sail on a schooner to the nearby Mamanuca Islands, with snorkelling and lunch included. Prices start from about $160 per person, which, when Traveller checked, was about $8 less than booking directly.

Another, a cultural show at VOU Amphitheatre in Nadi featuring “storytelling by young artists”, costs about $75 on the site, on parity with booking directly.

For Fiji Airways passengers travelling to the US, the LA offerings include the expected classics, such as celebrity home tours and Universal Studios tickets. But there’s also a three-hour history and architecture tour of Downtown for $60.

The platform is also part of Fiji Airways’ broader strategy of driving tourism growth from the US where travellers may be unfamiliar with all that Fiji has to offer.
