‘We’re better when we look out for each other’: Kidman’s first comments post split

Nicole Kidman has paid homage to Yellowstone and Lioness creator Taylor Sheridan, in her first public appearance since news broke that she and Keith Urban were filing for divorce.

Kidman stars in and executive produces the American spy thriller Lioness, which Sheridan created and also produces, which has had a third season confirmed for streaming service Paramount.

Speaking at a charity event for the Foundation for AIDS Research in Dallas, Kidman presented Sheridan with the Award of Inspiration.

“I think what Taylor recognises, as we all do, is that we are all more alike than we are different, and that we’re better when we look out for each other,” Kidman said in a video published by People magazine. “That of course is why we are here tonight. What better way to support, to help elevate our common humanity, than to help fund bold and innovative research.”

The event was held at the home of United Airlines chief executive Scott Kirby and focused on the fight against HIV/AIDS, honouring those making a difference through advocacy and innovation. Other attendees included Diana Ross and Teri Hatcher.

Meanwhile, Kidman’s public appearance following 57-year-old Urban’s return to the stage in Pennsylvania last week, as his High and Alive world tour rolled on. The Grammy Award winner included a photo of Kidman, 58, and their daughters in a slideshow shown onscreen as he sang his 2024 song Heart Like a Hometown.

Maggie Baugh, Urban’s 25-year-old guitar player, did not appear in the show last week. She has been the centre of speculation as the potential reason for the divorce, after Urban changed the lyrics to The Fighter, written for Kidman, to include her, and – in another show – gestured towards her while singing about love.

Urban regularly changes the lyrics to the song when performing it live: original duet partner Carrie Underwood often receives, “Carrie Underwood, I’m gonna be your fighter!”

A source close to the family – who chose to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the matter – said the split was not mutual, telling this masthead that Kidman has been fighting for the survival of the marriage and that she is “broken-hearted”.

Kidman and Urban married in 2006 in Sydney and were together for 19 years; they have two children, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14. On September 30, Kidman filed for divorce in a Nashville court citing “irreconcilable differences”.

The former couple has yet to make any public statement on their separation.
