Ultra-luxe expedition cruising is about to get more eco-friendly

Across the past two decades, segments of the cruise industry have been in a race to become the most eco-friendly.

Carbon footprint reduction and a commitment to green practices are key selling points, as guests demand a more environmentally sound experience, seek access to remote and sometimes delicate locations and ports request lower emissions.

Scenic Group’s discovery yacht Scenic Ikon, scheduled to join the fleet from April 2028, is set to advance the cause of good planetary citizenship. Scenic says it will “redefine ultra-luxury expedition cruising” with the new discovery yacht (ship, perhaps by any other name), so named because its design is inspired by the sleekness of the super yacht.

But while doing that, it will align with the Australian-founded company’s pursuit of sustainability, setting sail with a raft of advanced technologies designed to minimise environmental impact. These include a dynamic positioning system that eliminates the need to drop anchor, leaving seabeds and ecosystems undisturbed.

It will also run with battery technology and shore power connection, meaning engines can be turned off in port. That’s great for both the port, allowing zero emissions while in situ, and guests, who can enjoy the sounds of the location at night without engine noise.

Scenic Ikon will be fitted with Kongsberg Elegance Pods as its main propulsion system. These pods rotate 360 degrees, meaning it will be able to turn within her own length, sail relatively quietly with lower vibration and aid in reducing fuel use.

The vessel’s technology extends to the Polar Code 6 and Ice Class 1A Super strengthened hull. The former is an International Maritime Organisation marker, the latter the Finnish Swedish Ice Class rating. Compliance with these regulations mean Scenic Ikon can operate safely in ice conditions when it ventures into Polar regions. The form of the hull also reduces drag and enhances fuel efficiency.

For its maiden season, Scenic Ikon will make it to Antarctica after sailing her “primary base”, the Mediterranean.

Departing Venice in April 2028, a sailing that has already sold out, and continuing until March 2029, its season will span 110 ports, 21 countries and 26 new-to-Scenic destinations, including the Mediterranean, Aegean and Egypt, the Cape Verde Islands, Dakar, Antarctica, the Falkland Islands and the Chilean fjords.

The big sister ship to Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II, it carries 270 guests, 42 more than the Eclipses. It will have 135 all-verandah suites ranging from 34 to 250 square metres over five decks. Guests will be treated to the 1700-square-metre, two-level Senses Rejuvenation Spa, which will include hydrotherapy and thermal experiences.

For off-ship adventures, Scenic Ikon will be equipped with two Airbus H130-T2 helicopters, a custom-designed Triton AVA submersible, Zodiacs, and superyacht Fassmer tenders.

And for the foodies, there will be 15 distinctive dining venues, lounges and social spaces, up from the 10 on the Eclipses.
