Watch live: Trump’s second UK state visit

Rubies, diamonds and a symbolic sword

The gifts exchanged between the hosts and the guests have revealed the thinking on each side about how to impress and honour the other. The King and Queen presented Trump with a bespoke, hand-bound leather volume crafted by the Royal Bindery in Windsor Castle, to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4 next year. They also gave him the Union Jack that flew above Buckingham Palace on the day of Trump’s inauguration this year.

Melania, meanwhile, received a silver and enamel bowl made by Northern Ireland artist Cara Murphy and featuring Camilla’s cypher – a form of monogram. She was also given a personalised Anya Hindmarch handbag. As well as this, the King and Queen presented a joint gift to Trump and Melania: a silver photograph frame engraved with their joint cypher.

The gift from Trump and Melania to the King was a replica of a President Eisenhower Sword, a symbolic gift in memory of the partnership between the US and UK in winning World War II.

Their gift to the Queen was a Tiffany & Co vintage 18-carat gold, diamond and ruby flower brooch. This showcased an American company, but it was highly personalised for Camilla and Melania because it incorporated Queen’s birthstone (ruby) and the First Lady’s birthstone (diamond).

Trump lays a wreath at Queen Elizabeth II’s tomb

A key point of the visit so far took place in St George’s Chapel, part of Windsor Castle and the resting place of Queen Elizabeth II.

After the carriage procession and lunch, Trump and Melania visited the chapel to lay a wreath on Queen Elizabeth’s tomb, spending about 10 minutes in reflection. They took their seats in the chapel to hear young choristers sing the first movement from Vivaldi’s Gloria, and they later spoke to some of the singers.

The images from the chapel have also highlighted the members of the official party with the president. Sitting with him were Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

Trump greeted on tarmac at London’s Stansted Airport

Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, flew into London’s Stansted Airport late yesterday (Wednesday morning AEST) on Air Force One, where they were welcomed on the tarmac by The Viscount Hood, the Lord-in-Waiting to the King.

The president and his wife were then transferred to a US Marine helicopter and flown to Winfield House in central London, the residence of the US ambassador, before heading to Windsor earlier today.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is hoping to gain better trade terms in talks with Trump during this visit, which protesters are also targeting.

Watch live: Trump’s second UK state visit

Good morning from London

By David Crowe

Good morning, and welcome to our live coverage of Donald Trump’s visit to Windsor Castle, where King Charles will host a state banquet in the US president’s honour this evening. I’m David Crowe, the Europe Correspondent, filing from London on the ceremonial and the strategic aspects of this state visit.

Trump and his wife, Melania, arrived at Windsor Castle at about noon on Wednesday, local time, and were met by the Prince and Princess of Wales before the formal greeting from King Charles and Queen Camilla. We’re starting this coverage at about 5pm in London – or 2am on Thursday, AEST – just as we head towards the state banquet.

The weather is windy and cloudy, and it has already forced a change to the program: a fly-past by F-35 jet fighters from both the US and the UK has been cancelled. However, this has not stopped the fly-past by the Red Arrows, the Royal Air Force acrobatic aircraft team.

The high ceremony has a deep impact on Trump – there is no doubt about that. His mother was born in Scotland and adored the royal family, and he appears to have inherited some of that emotional attachment. Upon his arrival, he told reporters he loved Britain. “It’s a very special place,” he said.

We are about to find out how special this visit may be. There is a lot to come.
