Three dead in house fire in Sydney’s south-west

Three people have died in a house fire in Sydney’s south-west.

Emergency services were called to a fire at the home on Cornelia Street in Wiley Park about 9.45pm on Wednesday. Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews extinguished the blaze and found the bodies of three people inside.

The victims are yet to be formally identified. The property suffered extensive damage, police said.

Officers from Campsie Police Area Command have established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

While the cause is still being investigated, earlier this month FRNSW issued a safety reminder about “the most dangerous time of the year for house fires”.

As of July 15, FRNSW had already attended 480 residential fires this winter and 2025 this year.

FRNSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell encouraged residents to use the service’s free home fire safety visit program which includes smoke alarm checks.

“You can also take some simple steps to keep you and your family safe. For example, regularly check your smoke alarm, always keep looking when cooking, keep a fire blanket and extinguisher in your kitchen, keep flammable materials a metre from the heater, and don’t overload power board or power points,” Fewtrell said.

“Always check electric and heated blankets before turning them on, and look for frays, scorch marks, exposed wires or controller damage. If anything looks off, bin it.”
