Each week, we quiz a prominent person about their style and the inspiration behind it. Ahead, swimmer Bronte Campbell.
How would you describe your style? Varied and mood dependant.
What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe? A T-shirt from my friend’s high school band that’s at least 12 years old. It’s got some holes, but I still love wearing it.
And the most recent addition? My wedding dress. It’s a silk two-piece by Lola Varma with a bodice top and long bubble skirt. I love it so much; I felt stunning in it.
What would you wear … on a first date? A navy silk slip from Silk Laundry I wear when I want to feel fancy. And flats – I injured my ACL, so I won’t be wearing high heels for a while. … on a plane? An organic cotton Earthletica sweatsuit and Adidas “Samba” sneakers. … on the red carpet? I’m obsessed with Maticevski’s sculptural designs.
What’s your favourite fashion era? I like now because it’s a fun blend of past eras. For example, a square shoulder line is a toned-down version of the giant shoulder pads from the ’80s.
Who are your favourite designers? I love Silk Laundry and Bec + Bridge. I’m also obsessed with Modalità Vacanza; I wore one of their sparkly slip dresses over a Bondi Born swimsuit when I went for a swim during my wedding reception.
What’s your fragrance of choice? It’s so basic but I wear Marc Jacobs “Daisy” every day. And Le Labo “Jasmin 17” for special occasions.
What are the three essential items in your wardrobe? An oversized tee, activewear shorts and Frankie4 slides.
Any go-to jewellery? A ring with the Olympic rings engraved on it that my friends had made for me after my first Games in 2012, a necklace with a little “B” pendant, and diamond stud earrings from Mendel & Rose.
Can you remember a favourite outfit you wore as a child? When I was five, it was a T-shirt with a picture of cats and the words “I tried to be good” on it.
What was your first fashion moment? I went to my first Olympics when I’d just turned 18 and clearly remember the feeling of putting on the uniform. Then, when we finished our competition, I had this dress that had been in the back of my closet for a year before I had anywhere to wear it because I was training the entire time. Putting it on to go out with a team was like this transformation from athlete to young woman on the streets of London.
And your worst fashion mistake? When I was a teenager, I went through a stage of wearing cotton tights with shorts over the top. It was so bad.
What’s on your wish list? Trying to find wedding shoes, I went down a deep rabbit hole looking at vintage Chanel pumps. I didn’t find any for the wedding but I’d still love to own a pair.
Is there something you’d never wear? Scrunch-bum activewear.
Is there a current trend you like? Wide-leg pants. And sequins. I actually have a pair of wide-leg sequin pants.
What shoes do you wear the most? I live very close to the beach, so I’m often barefoot. Otherwise, its New Balance runners.
What do you sleep in? Pink satin pyjamas my sister and bridesmaid Cate gave me as a get-ready bridal outfit.
Who’s your favourite fashion icon? Audrey Hepburn for her elegant, enduring style. For a long time, I had a pixie cut that was very much inspired by Roman Holiday.
What do you wear on a typical working day? When I’m working from home it’s Earthletica activewear. If I need to look a little more professional, we have a great little onesie that I’ll wear with a boxy Isabelle Quinn blazer.
What’s your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look? I’ll be in the beer garden at the Bondi Diggers club in an oversized tee and Scanlan Theodore jeans.
