Welcome to Super Bowl LX!

Good morning and welcome to our live coverage of Super Bowl LX (that’s 60, for those who’ve forgotten your Roman numerals).

It’s the Seattle Seahawks taking on the New England Patriots at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

But that’s only one part of this massive sporting and cultural event. There’ll be celebs, the famous (and usually controversial) halftime show, those expensive ads, lots of drama and an estimated worldwide audience of 200 million people.

We have an epic day ahead of us, and a big team on the blog to bring it all to you. The legendary Michael Idato is at Levi Stadium, and we have Iain Payten, Frances Howe, Nell Geraets and Kayla Olaya on the tools back here in Australia.

Here are your basic details (in AEDT):

Kickoff: 10.30am
Halftime show: Midday
TV: Live on Channel Seven, and ESPN via Foxtel, Kayo and Disney+

Path to the Super Bowl: How did the Patriots and Seahawks get here?

How did we get here?

For anyone who’s been watching the NFL this season, you may have already come across a startling fact about this Super Bowl’s match up between the Seahawks and Patriots - it is one of the most unlikely pairings in a Super Bowl in 50 years, according to pre-season odds.

It’s also the first Super Bowl in more than 20 years to feature two teams who failed to make the playoffs in the previous season.

The Seahawks have only won one Super Bowl in the team’s 51-year history and three championship appearances. Their last time vying for the trophy was in 2015, coincidentally against the Patriots (more about that game soon).

On the other hand, the Patriots share the record for most Super Bowl wins (all under ex-coach Bill Belichick) with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the storied franchise also own the record for the most appearances and losses. But, this is the first time they’ve made a championship since 2018.

So here’s a very brief re-cap of how these two very unlikely teams have made it to the 60th Super Bowl.

Game day has arrived, and the buzz is building at Levi’s Stadium

It’s game day! The streets surround Levi’s Stadium are packed with crowds streaming into the stadium. As Super Bowl’s go, this one seems to be running smoothly. Levi’s is a relatively small stadium but it’s starting to soak up people like a sponge.

The setting is Santa Clara, California, and when you ask locals where we are, they generally say that this is in the centre of Silicon Valley, the world’s tech-bro capital. Which means there’s not a lot here, outside of a handful of malls and a sea of technology office parks.

In the runup to Super Bowl Sunday, the centre of the city felt like a ghost town. Which is to say, there’s not a lot of people on the streets, and the hubs of activity are a cluster of malls, which is where you find all the stores and restaurants. There’s no Oxford Street, or St Kilda Road equivalent here, for example. (For that, you’d head south, to San Jose.)

Today, of course, it’s a different story. The crowd is building, and while the stadium is still only partly full - official capacity is 68,500 - people are starting to swarm through the gates and take their seats.
