“Can’t wait for the movie Operation Desert Fury, starring Robert De Niro as Donald Trump with music by Bruce Springsteen. The screenplay is by Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert, from an original concept by Donald Trump, who says it will be the ‘GREATEST EVER MADE’ and if it doesn’t win a swag of Oscars, ‘THE AWARDS ARE RIGGED!’ Thank you for your attention to this matter.” And thank you, John Macdonald of Kings Langley.
The PM should think himself lucky. Stephanie Edwards of Leichhardt recalls that “in the 1990s our family hosted two Japanese exchange students for a short time. I still remember their shock when I took a kitchen knife to a rockmelon, to serve it for dessert. I was informed it was a ‘gift melon’ (C8) and an expensive item in Tokyo.”
Tony Sullivan of Islington “got a school holiday job with David Jones (C8) in Barrack Street and was sent to ‘Hardware’. We spent our time selling car wash kits and other Christmas gifts for men and sending customers who actually wanted real hardware up the road to Nock & Kirby. I had a fun few years being sent to all sorts of places for deliveries and jobs as I knew the city. My parents gradually accepted my stories of adventures into what for them were no-go zones.”
In the spirit of the times, Frans Boot of Gregory Hills says he “met an old acquaintance, Gerry, an incorrigible hoarder. He would not let on whether he’s got much petrol stashed away, but I reckon he has. Nobody can hoard petrol like Gerry can.”
Finally, some good news for the compilers of the Herald’s top 50 movies (C8), with the advocacy of Janice Creenaune of Austinmer: “There are many great Aussie films omitted from list according to my U3A Film group in Thirroul. However, I’m excited by the inclusion of Bad Boy Bubby. According to my husband, he’s been traumatised by it since my recommendation over a decade ago and my rep has been suffering ever since. I feel well vindicated and indeed chuffed.”
Roundabout capital (C8) is right, going by the recollections of Sonnie Hopkins of Tascott: “In 1967, my husband and I had a few days in Canberra on our honeymoon. Half an hour after leaving our hotel to drive to Sydney, I mentioned to my husband who was driving, ‘We just passed our hotel’.”
