Solemates on the rocks

Suzanne Saunders (C8) threw out the challenge for C8-ers to provide a punchline to a potential “an old fart and a lost sock walked into a bar” joke. Here’s just a sample of the copious replies, starting with Marion Newall of Point Frederick: “An old fart and a lost sock walk into a bar and ask the barman if he knows how to make a Naked and Famous cocktail.
‘Sure do,’ says the barman.
‘And what’s the main ingredient?’ asks the old fart.
‘Air freshener,’ says the barman.”

Searching for a quiet bevvy was Dave Lewington of Heathcoat: “An old fart and a lost sock walked into a bar.
They ask the barman for a drink.
The barman tells them to blow away as they don’t serve old windsocks.”

And Barry Lamb of Eastwood pulls the other one: “An old fart and a lost sock walk into a bar. The barman says to the old fart: ‘How can you say that sock is lost if it’s just walked in here?’ To which the old fart replies: ‘It didn’t walk in, it hopped!’”

Daniel Low of Pymble has more on Franco-Australian recognition (C8): “On a post-conference tour in Paris in 2018 we were taken to Les Invalides. When our guide discovered there were Australians in the group, he not only pointed out the special memorial plaque but took us into what is normally a locked section for tourists to give us a ‘special tour’.”

“Mention of Wayne Fontana (C8) takes me back to the early ’60s in the UK,” says Josephine Hill of Blackwall. “When he started out he was Glyn Ellis and played every Friday night at St Bernadette’s in Levenshulme, Manchester. We danced all night as he put on a superb show.”

Adding to the Commemoration Day (C8) kidnap selection is John Crowe of Cherrybrook: “In 1953, Ann Miller came to Brisbane to publicise the movie Kiss Me Kate in which she starred. A friend of mine had a presentable Daimler and with a group of fellow students from the University of Queensland we managed to kidnap her, (with her consent) on opening night. She was quite charming and enjoyed the prank.”

In light of the auction sale of Gus the T.Rex, Jim Dewar of Davistown notes that while “the sale of fossils is controversial. I can think of several that could be moved on without complaint from anyone.”
