Each week, we quiz a prominent person about their style and the inspiration behind it. Ahead, model Lara Worthington.
How would you describe your style? It’s quite instinctive. I love precious things but they have to feel lived in. I’m not drawn to anything too perfect. I like clothes that feel like they’ve been a part of your life for a while.
What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe? A charcoal grey blazer I found in a vintage store in New York City; it’s probably late ’80s, early ’90s. I reach for it constantly because it works with everything.
And the most recent addition? I recently bought a vintage John Galliano dress on The RealReal; I’d say it’s early 2000s. It’s got that Dior-era feeling when things were romantic but still directional.
What would you wear … on a first date? Leather pants with a lace top and a pointed The Row slingback. … on a plane? A tailored trouser, vintage tee, soft oversized knit and my Saint Laurent leather jacket. … on the red carpet? I really love red carpet dressing and trying to create moments that feel timeless, although I can’t say I always get it right. If I could choose any designer, I’d love to wear Alaïa, something clean and sculptural. The precision and restraint feel incredibly powerful.
What’s your favourite fashion era? The ’90s, always; it was instinctive and pared back but still sensual. I especially love the make-up from that era: it was minimal, skin looked like skin, soft brown tones, slightly smudged eyes. It felt real and a bit undone, which I always find more interesting.
Who are your favourite designers? I love discovering young designers. Charlotte Knowles of London-based label KNWLS is amazing, and Viktor Gichev is an incredible artist. He made a dress for me for the Avatar: Fire and Ash European premiere. It was a one-of-a-kind piece, and I’ve never felt more special wearing something.
What’s your fragrance of choice? Tsu Lange Yor “Sage’s Rose”.
What are three essential items in your wardrobe? A great blazer, a well-cut coat and leather pieces, including my Witchery “Drawcord Funnel Neck” jacket [from my collaboration] that can be worn as a dress with tights.
Any go-to jewellery? I’m particular about jewellery, it’s so personal. I have two Sophie Bille Brahe rings I never take off. I also love Spustova for earrings and other one-of-a-kind pieces.
Can you remember a favourite outfit you wore as a child? I was very much a tomboy; I’d wear my mum’s oversized jackets and pretend they were mine.
What was your first fashion moment? It was realising clothes could change how you feel. I remember as a teenager putting on something simple, like a fitted tank top and jeans, and feeling confident for the first time. It wasn’t about the outfit being “fashion”, it was just about feeling like myself. That stayed with me.
And your worst fashion mistake? Over-accessorising in the early 2000s. There were a lot of necklaces involved.
What’s on your wish list? Honestly, a really good make-up bag. Something practical that looks good. I’ve been searching for the perfect one for years.
Is there something you’d never wear? Anything that feels too forced or trend-driven.
Is there a current trend you like? Tailoring and strong silhouettes.
What shoes do you wear most often? I wear a pair of simple, black Ann Demeulemeester boots – clean, no hardware, mid-heel – on repeat. They go with everything and don’t date.
What do you wear to bed? A La Perla silk slip or my husband’s [actor Sam Worthington] T-shirts.
Who’s your favourite fashion icon? Chloë Sevigny. I love how she dresses for herself and there’s no sense of trying to be perfect. It’s instinctive, a bit off at times but always interesting. She makes things feel personal rather than styled.
What do you wear on a typical working day? A tailored trouser with a vintage skate tee and leather jacket or oversized blazer.
What’s your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look? Something comfortable but considered: relaxed trousers, an oversized knit and boots.
