Watch: Roads turn to rivers as floods hit Spanish island of Ibiza

A red alert for rain has been issued by Spain's meteorological agency for the holiday islands of Ibiza and Formentera, with as much as 180mm (7in) of rainfall expected in a 12-hour window.

The red alert for rain began at 11:00 local time (10:00 BST; 09:00 GMT) on Tuesday and is in place for several hours until 16:00. The Spanish island also issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, from 08:00 until 18:00 on Tuesday.

Firefighters in Ibiza were deployed to rescue people believed to be trapped inside their vehicles and homes, the island's local authorities said.

Access to the towns of Sant Antoni de Portmany and Santa Eulària are closed, local media report, and Ibiza's E-10 main road is flooded.

Mallorca, another Balearic island, is also at risk of heavy rainfall and floods with Spain's weather agency, known as Aemet, placing it under a yellow alert for rain and thunderstorms.

Emergency services have warned of the risk of flooding and have urged people to avoid travelling and outdoor activities.

Spanish media report that emergency services issued a telephone alert to those covered by the red alert, with people urged to avoid flood-prone areas, including low-lying ground and basements. They have also been warned to seek higher ground if water enters their homes.

On Monday, an alert was in place on the Spanish mainland in Valencia as Storm Gabrielle struck the region. Aemet reported that between 160mm and 200mm of rain had fallen in six to eight hours around the Ebro delta. Schools were forced to close across the region.

Authorities downgraded the threat of downpours there on Tuesday from a red alert to a yellow.

It comes a year after Valencia experienced deadly and devastating floods, which claimed the lives of more than 230 people.
