Washington: Conservative political activist Charlie Kirk, a prominent MAGA campaigner and fundraiser for President Donald Trump, has been shot while speaking at a university in Utah.
NBC News reported Kirk was about 20 minutes into a presentation when witnesses heard shots fired from a nearby building, citing a spokesperson for Utah Valley University.
Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was shot on Wednesday at an event at Utah Valley University.
Video circulating on social media appeared to show Kirk being hit in the neck while sitting inside an outdoor tent and speaking. People in the crowd screamed in horror.
One video, which this masthead has chosen not to publish because it is too graphic, showed Kirk physically recoiling after being struck, and blood streaming from his neck.
Trump posted on social media: “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!”
A suspect was reportedly in custody, while Kirk had been taken to hospital in an unknown condition.
FBI director Kash Patel said his agency had sent agents to the scene. “Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected,” he said.
“Agents will be on the scene quickly and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation.”
Mike Lee, a Republican senator from Utah, said on X: “I am tracking the situation at Utah Valley University closely. Please join me in praying for Charlie Kirk and the students gathered there.”
Kirk, 31, founded the conservative political advocacy group Turning Point USA, as well as a political action committee by the same name. He is an evangelical Christian and the group conducts a lot of its work with Christian communities and students on campus.
