Police hunt Sydney rapper after brazen Surry Hills killing

A Sydney rapper is wanted in connection with the brazen underworld killing of Nadal Acherkouk at a Surry Hills service station forecourt in November.

Harley Johan, a 31-year-old also known by the rap name “YC Ewzy”, was issued an arrest warrant in September, almost one year after Acherkouk, who had links to organised crime, was ambushed and killed by two masked shooters at the Cleveland Street service station, after police say he had dinner at a nearby Turkish restaurant.

Police believe Johan is overseas, and are calling for help in finding him. It is not known what his alleged involvement in the shooting may be.

He has posted several songs online, including a depiction of a drive-by shooting in his music video for Reckless, which shows two masked men jumping from a black BMW to intercept another vehicle and open fire on the person in the driver’s seat with two pistols.

Reckless is the latest song posted to Johan’s channel, published in March, which according to the track description, captures the “harsh realities of street life” in the “gritty streets” of Sydney. The visuals are said to show “the city’s darker side”, as Johan’s lyrics “narrate the struggles of survival”.

The first music video posted to Johan’s YouTube channel, posted in December 2021 for a song called Drama, features several depictions of gun violence, including a drive-by shooting and a carpark shootout. The video begins with a disclaimer noting that it is a “work of fiction and is made purely for entertainment purposes”, and that any “real life resemblance” is “purely coincidental”.

Warning: video contains offensive language

After firing shots at Acherkouk, the alleged offenders drove from the station in a stolen Porsche to nearby Kensington, where they set alight the vehicle before fleeing in another stolen white Audi.
