Almost 10 years had passed since my last Bali visit, and while there were obvious changes – more traffic, tattoo parlours and leather shops – what really stood out is the vibrant food scene that has exploded over the last decade. While a tasty nasi goreng from a local warung remains a highlight of any Bali trip, those also seeking higher-end culinary experiences will find a bunch of exciting new options popping up in the Canggu and Pererenan areas. Here are six of the best.
Masonry, Canggu Known for its Mediterranean-inspired menu, Masonry has been a Bali staple since 2018. Today, the brand spans three locations: Canggu and Uluwatu in Bali, and Niseko, Japan, which opened in December 2025. From house-made charcuterie to a moreish fattoush, the kitchens across all locations are led by acclaimed chef Benjamin Cross, whose culinary philosophy centres on “elevated simplicity”.
Shelter, Pererenan Led by British chef and co-owner Stephen Moore – formerly of Sydney’s Rockpool and Icebergs, and Spain’s three-Michelin-starred El Racó de Can Fabes – Shelter’s menu blends Middle Eastern and Mediterranean influences. Standout dishes include lamb kofta, barbecued octopus and roasted bone marrow.
Hippie Fish, Pererenan Right on the beachfront, Hippie Fish is a hotspot for sunset dining. The kitchen focuses heavily on local seafood prepared with a European touch – think spaghetti vongole and grilled tuna steak – complemented by a rooftop cocktail lounge for after-dinner drinks.
Muda By/Suka, Canggu Welcome to sophistication without a hefty price tag, the dimly lit interiors setting the stage for an inventive menu that marries traditional Indonesian flavours with contemporary East Asian techniques. Standouts include the signature sushi nori tacos and delicious dumplings.
Bar Vera, Pererenan At Bar Vera, co-founder and chef Benjamin Cross (also of Masonry) showcases local seasonal produce in a stylish yet relaxed wine bar. Don’t miss popular weekly fixtures including Steak Frites Night and “Le Brunch Sundays”.
Artisan, Pererenan Led by executive chef Paolo Tancredi Arlotta, whose impressive CV includes Copenhagen’s Noma, Sydney’s Quay and Melbourne’s Vue de Monde, Artisan delivers a sophisticated menu. Signature plates include a seafood risotto, gnocchi with beef cheek, and there’s a sublime Basque cheesecake to finish off.
