New Farm aged care facility to make way for luxury apartments

A New Farm aged care centre, which is set to make way for luxury apartments, has sold for more than $37 million.

The 5727-square-metre Ozcare facility at 424 Bowen Terrace will be demolished and redeveloped by Sydney company Fortis, which plans to build 74 units and four freestanding homes on the site.

The development application also includes a basement car park and central courtyard, with gardens, a pool and spa.

“This is a major opportunity to create something truly exceptional in Brisbane’s most prestigious suburb,” agent Brendan Hogan said in a statement.

The aged care centre was closed by Ozcare after more than 30 years of operation.

Real estate service company Colliers reported on Wednesday that the site had been offloaded to Fortis for $37.5 million after an expressions-of-interest campaign.

Community feedback on the proposal has been minimal, but in September, an anonymous resident flagged concerns with Brisbane City Council about the proposed selection of greenery.

“As a keen gardener and bush carer, I’m concerned at some of [the] planting choices,” the resident wrote in a public submission.

“The groundcovers indicate a closer connection to Brazil than it does South East Queensland, let alone Brisbane.

“I would urge the council to push for a more native palette with a stronger connection to country and Brisbane.”

Ozcare previously said it would use the funds raised to invest in new aged care facilities across the state.
