Labradors are top dog in Brisbane, while Charlie comfortably leads the pack in the naming department.

New data from Brisbane City Council also shows which suburbs had the highest pooch ownership in the last year, and highlights the growing cultural footprint of hit cartoon Bluey.

“They cope all right in summer,” Chris said of his pug Zelda and chihuahua Henry on a walk at the Botanic Gardens on Friday morning.

“We’ve had them for five and six years … since they were puppies.”

Long-haired dogs are popular across the city, with labradors followed by cavalier King Charles spaniels, border collies, Malteses, Staffordshire bull terriers, golden retrievers, Australian kelpies, poodles, dachshunds and cocker spaniels.

Bracken Ridge has the most dogs outright, followed by The Gap, Forest Lake, Wynnum, Ashgrove, Carindale, Coorparoo, Brighton, Manly West and Camp Hill.

Bella was the second most popular name, followed by Coco, Luna, Daisy, Ruby, Molly, Frankie, Archie and Max.

There were more than 400 dogs with names from popular Brisbane-made kids show Bluey, with 190 Chillis, 103 Bandits, 55 Bingos and 65 pooches named after the titular Bluey.

The data doesn’t reveal if Australian Cattle Dogs – the breed of the central family in the program – has grown in popularity, as pet Clown Fish did following the release of finding Nemo.

Other unusual dog names across the city included Ziggy Stardust the Third, Starvin Marvin McLovin and Jabba the Mutt.

“Brisbane is Australia’s lifestyle capital and our furry friends make it even more paw-some,” Councillor Sarah Hutton said in a statement.

“Whatever their name, we encourage all owners to register their pets to help keep them safe.”
