Each week, we quiz a prominent person about their style and the inspiration behind it. Ahead, actor Tammin Sursok.

When it comes to the red carpet, actor Tammin Sursok likes “something tight and strapless on top and with a bit of body in the skirt”.

How would you describe your style? Laid-back, comfortable, versatile and exploratory.

What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe? A Louis Vuitton backpack I got for my 30th birthday. I still use it, it’s great for travel

And the most recent addition? I was in Japan earlier this year and bought so much stuff I had to buy another suitcase. They have great vintage shops, and I bought this black leather jacket with a hood. I love how pieces like that have a story. As an actor, I’m always thinking about what it’s like to be in someone else’s body; it’s cool that someone had all these experiences in this jacket and now I have it.

What are three essential items in your wardrobe? An oversized Isabel Marant denim jacket, a pair of Edie black sandals, and a little bee necklace I got from a stall at Manly markets [in Sydney] that I wear all the time.

What would you wear … on a first date? Wide-leg jeans, a singlet top, leather jacket and boots.
… on a plane? Black Nike sweats and my boots, always, because they’re too heavy for a carry-on suitcase. … on the red carpet? I like something tight and strapless on top and with a bit of body in the skirt. I like an outfit to crop at the knee – it works for my body shape – otherwise I look like I’m being engulfed by material.

What’s your favourite fashion era? I had so much fun in the 2000s but I don’t think I looked my best – I was in Tencel jeans and Hypercolor T-shirts. However, I love Sienna Miller’s boho-chic style from that era.

Who are your favourite designers? Alémais, Carla Zampatti, Scanlan Theodore, Bec + Bridge and Zimmermann. I’m also loving Bianca Spender – her pieces are pretty and structured with wow factor.

What’s your fragrance of choice? I’m really into Ouai “St. Barts” hair and body mist. I can get triggered by strong smells and this is very light.

Can you remember a favourite outfit you wore as a child? Overalls were really big back in my day. When I was 12, I had Tencel overalls in every colour and wore them almost every day. I think they’re having a bit of a comeback, especially in Nashville, where I live.

Any go-to jewellery? Other than my wedding and engagement rings, I wear a Cartier “Love” ring that I got when my podcast launched.

What was your first fashion moment? The dress I wore when I was 15 and won the Logie [for Most Popular New Female Talent] wasn’t the most fashionable, but it will be etched in my memory forever. It was a dark pink satin number, and it’s stuck in time for me because that moment changed my life.

And your worst fashion mistake? Back in my Home and Away days I would wear double tops. I went to so many red carpet events wearing two singlets; I thought it was so cool.

Is there a current trend you like? I feel like leather’s having a moment. I like the leather boyfriend pants. And [the colour] brown, whether it’s brown eyeliner, a jacket or suitcase – there’s something going on there.

What do you sleep in? Silk Eberjey pyjamas.

What’s on your wish list? A vintage Gucci bumbag and a pair of Isabel Marant booties.

What shoes do you wear most often? I’m always in Dr. Martens-style boots.

Who’s your favourite fashion icon? Sienna Miller for her effortless and authentic style. There’s a femininity to it, but it’s still sexy.

What do you wear on a typical working day? Reformation boyfriend jeans, a white tee, gold jewellery and boots.

What’s your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look? I’ll be in a dress, denim jacket and booties.

Tammin Sursok is an ambassador for 28 by Sam Wood.
