A plan to significantly increase the number of homes around three suburban public transport hubs in Brisbane has been revealed.
Taller buildings will be permitted near Indooroopilly and Carindale shopping centres, while more apartments will be allowed in mixed-use developments around Nundah Village.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the plan would help limit urban sprawl and bring people closer to the infrastructure they need.

“We want to put more homes where the jobs are, where the transport is, and where the services are,” he said in a statement.
“By focusing on anti-sprawl, we protect Brisbane’s unique lifestyle while creating opportunity and greater housing choice for the next generation.
“This is about delivering new homes for Brisbane families while ensuring our suburbs remain the best places to live, work and relax.”

The plan shares some similarities with Sydney’s Transport Oriented Development scheme, which allows higher-density development within 400 metres of more than 30 significant train and metro stations.
New housing will be centred around Indooroopilly shopping centre and train station, the Westfield Carindale Shopping Centre and bus interchange, and Nundah Village shopping centre and station.
The existing height limits are 10 storeys around Carindale shopping centre, and 20 storeys at Indooroopilly. Planning rules will be changed at both locations to make it easier for developers to construct taller buildings.
In Nundah, the existing limit of 12 storeys will remain, but changes will allow more residential homes in mixed-use buildings.
Work on the plan will begin shortly, with community consultation next year.
Full details are expected to be announced by Schrinner on Wednesday at a Lord Mayor’s Vision for Brisbane event at Star Casino.
