Mansions aren’t the only homes that can be beautiful. Home buyers on a budget can find stylish and liveable options if they know where to look, especially in a market downturn.

Good design can create visual interest, bring in light and offer a connection to nature, even in small spaces. And units in boutique apartment blocks are highly sought after by first home buyers, downsizers or smaller households.

Here are five of the best homes in Melbourne with an asking price of $900,000 or less.

This two-bedroom apartment is one of only 10 in the Fitzroy North Fire Station warehouse development.

The building has the original Metropolitan Fire Brigade facade and offers character and a sense of history.

The apartment is well set back from the street and offers spacious living, with a northern aspect that captures natural light.

Both bedrooms have built-in robes, while the open-plan kitchen and living area open to a terrace overlooking the parklands across the road.

Other features include secure off-street parking, a European-style laundry, storage and split-system heating and cooling.

The property is scheduled for auction on July 25, with a price guide of $780,000 to $850,000.
