Modric posts astounding milestone

By Roy Ward

Croatia and Panama have it all to play for when they kick off in Toronto at 9am AEST.

Luka Modric brings up an astounding 200th national team appearance today - that is a mind-blowing number and shows incredible staying power during his decades in this national team.

The 40-year-old made his senior debut in 2006 and has gone on to become a world superstar for his beloved Croatia and at Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid and AC Milan.

Modric also played for Croatia at U15, U17, U19 and U21 levels, so this is in total somewhere around his 237th appearance in the white and red checkerboard colours.

“He’s one of the greatest to play the game,” Kevin-Prince Boateng said on SBS during pregame.

Croatia must win this one today, so expect to see the little maestro on the front foot from the start as England’s draw has opened the door for Croatia to pressure them for top spot, although England have the tiebreaker due to winning their match-up.

How Group J looks now

It could be worse for England who still leave that match as the group’s leaders on goal difference. Their next match is against Panama on Sunday (AEST) where they should earn their ticket through to the round of 32.

Tuchel laments late Kane miss

By Roy Ward

England manager Thomas Tuchel sees it the same as everyone else - how did Harry Kane miss that last chance?

Tuchel tried to remain upbeat in his post game comments, England still has Panama to come and should put themselves in position to win this group.

But they’ve only taken a draw from this match when they were desperate for a win.

“If it should drop to anybody, it should drop to Harry, it was a big chance,” Tuchel said post game.

The stats that explain England’s goalless draw

By

England finish the match with 19 shots but only four of them on target and it was a very quiet game for keeper Jordan Pickford.

England and Ghana draw 0-0

By

England win four corners in the six additional minutes of this half, but Ghana’s entire side are defending in the box.

The commentator has just informed us that this would be England’s 13th goalless draw in a World Cup – the most of any other team.

The full-time whistle blows and England and Ghana will each earn a point to lead group L. Ghanian fans are celebrating keeping a fair higher ranked side to a goalless draw, but the English look more morose and will feel they should have gained three points.

Nil-all in England v Ghana after 90 minutes

By

Kane rightly has his head in his hands in the 86th minute when he misses what should have been England’s winning goal.

It follows O’Reilly’s header from the centre of the box after a cross from Reece James. His header hits the left post, but Kane gets to the rebound while Asare is still low after moving to save the header. Despite the room in goal Kane aims too high and his shot soars above the goal.

An earlier attempt from Bukayo Saka forced Asare to make his best save of the night, diving to his right side to keep it out.

Ghana make another substitution taking off Marvin Senaya and putting on Kojo Peprah Oppong.

There will be six minutes of additional time while the ball remains in Ghana’s defensive third as England keep searching for a goal.

England make more substitutions as Ghana gets a shot

By

There’s a great chance for Ghana when Issahaku steals the ball and strides up the right side of the pitch, he finds a pass to Adu who gets a weak shot at close range but it’s blocked by Konsa who makes a brilliant recovery run. Adu is caught off-side afterwards anyway.

England made more substitutions in the 73rd minute, replacing Jude Bellingham with Morgan Rogers and Elliot Anderson with Eberechi Eze. Marcus Rashford – who scored in England’s 4-2 win over Croatia alongside Kane and Bellingham comes on for Noni Madueke.
